5 September Focus Foods Worth Carrying Into Fall

Five September focus foods that continue to work beautifully through fall: winter squash, kale, pears, cauliflower, and black sesame.

5 September Focus Foods Worth Carrying Into Fall

September is almost over, but that does not mean the focus foods suddenly stop being useful.

In fact, a few of them become even easier to use as we move deeper into fall.

Here are the five I would keep in regular rotation.

1. Winter squash

This is the obvious one.

Squash moves easily from September into October and November because it works in:

  • sheet-pan meals
  • breakfast hash
  • bowls
  • pasta sauce
  • tacos
  • stuffed squash
  • grain dishes

If you roast it once, you can use it several ways.

2. Kale

Kale becomes even more useful as meals get warmer.

Saute it into eggs. Add it to beans. Stir it into soup. Roast it until crisp. Fold it through grains.

I like kale because it can be a side dish or simply disappear into a meal you are already making.

3. Pears

Pears carry fall flavor without requiring a dessert.

Use them in:

  • yogurt
  • warm cereal
  • toast
  • salads
  • roasted vegetables
  • flatbreads

They pair especially well with walnuts, cinnamon, goat cheese, and bitter greens.

4. Cauliflower

Cauliflower works through cooler weather because roasting turns it into something warm and satisfying.

It can also stand in for part of the starch in a meal when you want more vegetables without eliminating grains completely.

I like the mix: cauliflower plus potatoes, cauliflower plus farro, cauliflower plus beans.

5. Black sesame seeds

Black sesame seeds are not seasonal in the same way produce is, which is exactly why they are useful to keep.

They work on:

  • oatmeal
  • toast
  • tofu
  • roasted vegetables
  • noodles
  • fruit
  • yogurt

A small jar lasts a long time and gives simple food a little texture and visual contrast.

What I am not doing

I am not making a rule that these five foods now have to appear every week.

The purpose of focus foods is to create direction, not another checklist.

September gave us a transition. October can build on it.

Keep what worked. Add what sounds good next. Let the seasonal rhythm do some of the planning for you.
