12 Things to Review Before Fall
Before fall arrives, take a practical look at your health, movement, home, digital life, finances, social connection, and the systems that support healthy aging.
The August Healthy Aging Check-In: 12 Things to Review Before Fall
Before we rush into September, I want to do something we rarely give ourselves time to do.
Pause.
Not to judge the month.
Not to create a giant new goal list.
Just to look at life honestly.
What is working?
What is getting harder?
What keeps getting postponed?
What would make the next few months easier?
Healthy aging is bigger than food.
It is bigger than exercise.
It includes our homes.
Our finances.
Our relationships.
Our technology.
Our medical care.
Our sleep.
Our routines.
Even our sense of joy.
So think of this as a scan.
You do not need to fix all 12 categories.
You are looking for the one area where a small change could remove the most friction.
1. Health Appointments
Open your calendar.
Look at the rest of the year.
Are you due for anything?
Maybe:
- Primary care
- Dental
- Vision
- Hearing
- Specialist follow-up
- Preventive screening
Appointments are easier to schedule before something becomes urgent.
This is especially useful as we move toward the end of the year, when calendars often get crowded.
2. Medication and Supplement List
Is your list current?
Could someone else find it?
Does it include:
- Medication names
- Doses
- Allergies
- Supplements
- Pharmacy
- Emergency contacts
This is not glamorous organization.
It is practical organization.
3. Movement
Look at the last month.
Did your movement include more than one type?
You do not need a perfect routine.
But ideally, your week has some combination of:
- Aerobic movement
- Strength
- Balance
- Mobility
If one piece is consistently missing, that is useful information.
You do not need to redesign everything.
Add the missing piece.
4. Sleep
How are you actually sleeping?
Not how many hours your tracker says.
How do you feel?
Ask:
- Am I going to bed at roughly the same time?
- Is caffeine too late in the day?
- Am I staying on screens too long at night?
- Is pain waking me?
- Am I waking rested?
Sleep problems can have many causes.
The important thing is not to normalize a problem that has been getting worse.

5. Home Safety
Walk through your home slowly.
Look at it like you have never seen it before.
Where could you trip?
Where is the lighting poor?
What do you routinely climb to reach?
Are cords in walkways?
Are rugs sliding?
Are frequently used items stored too high or too low?
Your home should get easier to live in as you age.
Not harder.
6. Emergency Readiness
Could you leave your home quickly if you needed to?
Do you have:
- Identification
- Medication information
- Basic supplies
- Chargers
- Pet needs
- Important contact information
You do not need a bunker.
You need a plan.
Preparedness reduces decision-making when stress is high.
7. Digital Organization
Are your important files backed up?
Do you know where your passwords are managed?
Can you find important digital documents?
Are your photos stored somewhere besides one aging phone?
We spend a huge part of life digitally now.
Our organization systems need to reflect that.
8. Finances
August is a good time to look before holiday spending begins.
Review:
- Subscriptions
- Recurring bills
- Insurance
- Savings
- Debt
- Upcoming large expenses
You do not need to build a new financial plan in one afternoon.
Just look.
Avoidance makes finances more stressful.
Clarity makes them manageable.
9. Social Connection
Who have you not talked to in too long?
Who makes you feel better after you spend time with them?
Is your social life happening only by accident?
Connection deserves intention.
Schedule:
- A walk
- Coffee
- Lunch
- A phone call
- A class
- A recurring meet-up
Do not wait until you feel lonely to build connection.
10. Brain Engagement
Are you learning anything?
Creating anything?
Reading?
Solving problems?
Trying new technology?
Exploring somewhere new?
The brain benefits from use.
You do not need “brain games” every day.
Curiosity counts.
Learning counts.
Creativity counts.
11. Joy
This one matters more than people think.
What are you looking forward to?
If your calendar contains only:
- Work
- Appointments
- Bills
- Obligations
something is missing.
Put something on the calendar that has no purpose other than enjoyment.
Art.
Music.
A hike.
A day trip.
A movie.
Lunch with a friend.
Joy is not a reward you earn after finishing everything else.
