Do You Still Remember How to Skip? A Funny Little Reminder About Movement After 60

The other day at work, we got into a funny conversation about those TikTok reels showing older adults trying to skip like they did as kids.

It sounded simple enough. I mean, skipping is one of those things you do naturally as a child without even thinking about it. Or so we thought.

The ladies in their 30s and early 40s remembered right away and could skip pretty well. The ladies in their late 40s had to try it a few times before they found their rhythm again. The ladies in their 50s had a much tougher time and never quite got the flow down.

Then there was me, a woman in her 60s, realizing that even I had trouble remembering how to do it. I practiced several times before I found a little rhythm, but it was still more challenging than I expected.

Then we tried jumping.

That was another interesting story.

What really stood out to me is that out of all of us, I am the one who regularly lifts weights, exercises, and hikes. I stay active. I move my body. I put in the work.

But this kind of movement challenge was a whole different can of worms.

It reminded me that strength and endurance matter, but so do balance, rhythm, coordination, agility, and the ability to move with confidence against gravity in different ways.

That little skipping experiment told me something important.

Movement After 60 Is About More Than Just Exercise

As we get older, it is easy to focus on the basics: walking, strength training, maybe hiking, maybe stretching once in a while if we remember.

Those things matter. A lot.

But this funny little moment at work made me realize there are other forms of movement that deserve attention too. Things like:

  • balance
  • flexibility
  • coordination
  • mobility
  • reaction time
  • rhythm
  • body control

These skills may not always show up in a workout log, but they absolutely show up in everyday life.

They show up when you catch yourself before a fall.
They show up when you step off a curb.
They show up when you climb over rocks on a trail.
They show up when you twist, reach, bend, recover, and move through life without fear.

That is the kind of movement that helps us truly thrive beyond 60.

Why This Matters More As We Age

One of the biggest goals of staying active as we get older is not just looking fit or even feeling fit.

It is staying capable.

It is maintaining the kind of strength and body awareness that helps us stay independent, avoid injury, and keep doing the things we love.

If something as basic as skipping or jumping feels awkward, stiff, or hard to coordinate, that is valuable information. Not something to feel bad about. Just something to pay attention to.

For me, it was a reminder that I need to add more flexibility, balance, and gravity based exercises into my regular routine so I can build more full body resilience as I age.

A Good Reminder for Me and Maybe for You Too

Even though I lift weights, hike, and stay more active than many people my age, this experience showed me that there are still gaps in my movement.

That is not failure. That is feedback.

And honestly, that is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves as we get older: the willingness to learn, adjust, and keep improving.

Sometimes the lesson does not come from a formal workout.

Sometimes it comes from trying to skip across the floor and realizing your body is asking for a little more support in areas you have not focused on enough.

What Can Help

This is where practices like yoga, Tai Chi, and mobility based movement can be so helpful.

They support:

  • flexibility
  • coordination
  • controlled movement
  • balance
  • posture
  • stability
  • mind body awareness

Simple rebounding, light jumping drills, balance exercises, and controlled single leg movements may also help improve confidence and coordination over time.

It does not have to be extreme.

It just has to be intentional.

Thriving Beyond 60 Means Staying Teachable

One thing I have learned in this season of life is that thriving beyond 60 is not about pretending you can do everything exactly like you did at 10 years old.

It is about paying attention.

It is about staying teachable.

It is about noticing where you feel strong, where you feel stiff, where you feel steady, and where your body could use more support.

That funny little skipping challenge was more than a joke. It was a reminder.

Keep moving.
Keep learning.
Keep practicing.
Keep building a body that can carry you well through the years ahead.

And maybe every now and then, test yourself with something playful and unexpected.

You might learn a lot.

Have You Had This Experience?

Have you tried skipping, jumping, hopping, or doing some other childhood movement lately and realized it was not as easy as you remembered?

You are definitely not alone.

Sometimes those little moments tell us exactly what we need to work on next.

And that is not a bad thing. That is part of the process of aging well.

Let’s keep flexing our plant power, moving with purpose, and doing what we can to thrive beyond 60.

When was the last time you tried skipping, hopping, or doing something playful like you did as a kid? You might be surprised what your body tells you.
