Strength work doesn’t have to mean a gym, a big time commitment, or an exhausting workout. A chair, a counter, and 12 minutes can help you practice movements you use every day. The goal is to move with control—not chase a number.

Before you start

Use a sturdy chair that will not slide, supportive shoes, and a clear floor. If you have recent falls, dizziness, pain, or a medical reason to limit exercise, ask a qualified clinician what is appropriate. Keep a counter or sturdy support within reach.

Your 12-minute routine

Minutes 0–2: Easy warm-up. March gently in place, roll your shoulders, and move your ankles.

Minutes 2–5: Chair rises. Sit near the front of a stable chair, feet hip-width apart. Stand tall, using your hands if needed, then sit slowly. Do a comfortable set, pause, and repeat.

Minutes 5–8: Supported split-stance holds. Hold a counter, step one foot back just a little, and keep both feet planted. Stay tall for 10–20 seconds, switch sides, and repeat. This is a stable stance drill—not a deep lunge.

Minutes 8–10: Supported calf raises. With fingertips on the counter, rise onto the balls of your feet and lower with control. Try 6–10 repetitions, rest, and repeat if comfortable.

Minutes 10–12: Cool down. Walk slowly, breathe normally, and gently relax your shoulders.

How to progress safely

First make the movement smoother. Then add a repetition or a few seconds—not everything at once. If standing movements feel unsteady, keep both hands on support or choose seated ankle raises. Stop if you feel chest discomfort, faintness, or unusual shortness of breath.

The habit that makes it stick

Put this routine next to something that already happens: after the morning coffee, before lunch, or while dinner cooks. Two or three sessions a week can be a practical beginning, with recovery days between harder sessions.

A few controlled minutes count. Consistency will serve you better than a complicated routine you never want to repeat.
