5 Easy September Breakfasts That Are Not Just Oatmeal
Five easy September breakfast ideas using squash, pears, figs, plums, kale, and other seasonal foods.
Oatmeal is useful, affordable, and easy.
But I do not want to eat it every morning.
September gives us enough variety to build warm and cool breakfasts that still feel simple.

1. Squash & Egg Breakfast Hash
Warm 1 cup roasted winter squash in a skillet with chopped kale. Add one whole egg plus two egg whites, or use tofu scramble if you prefer.
Season with smoked paprika, black pepper, and a little thyme.
Why it works: you get vegetables, protein, and satisfying carbohydrates in one pan.
2. Pear Buckwheat Skillet Bowl
Warm 3/4 cup cooked buckwheat with a splash of milk. Add one chopped pear and cinnamon. Cook until the pear softens.
Top with sunflower butter or walnuts.
Why it works: buckwheat gives breakfast a different texture from oats and works beautifully with pears.
3. Fig Yogurt Crunch
Spoon plain yogurt into a bowl and top with 3 sliced fresh figs, toasted walnuts, black sesame seeds, and a small drizzle of honey if the figs need it.
Add a few spoonfuls of oats or granola if you want more carbohydrate.
Why it works: it takes about five minutes and makes the most of fresh-fig season.
4. Plum Cottage Cheese Toast
Toast one or two slices of whole-grain bread.
Top with cottage cheese, thin plum slices, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts.
For a savory-sweet version, add black pepper instead of cinnamon.
Why it works: cottage cheese adds protein while plums keep the toast fresh and seasonal.
5. Apple-Kale Breakfast Quesadilla
Saute chopped kale until soft. Layer it in a whole-grain tortilla with thin apple slices and a small amount of goat cheese or shredded cheese.
Fold and toast in a dry skillet until crisp.
Why it works: this is a good breakfast for people who prefer savory food in the morning but still want fruit in the meal.

A simple breakfast rule
I try to build breakfast around three things:
Protein + plants + something satisfying
That might be eggs + kale + squash.
Or yogurt + figs + walnuts.
Or cottage cheese + plum + whole-grain toast.
It does not have to be perfect. It needs to keep you comfortable and fueled for your morning.
And if you love oatmeal? Keep eating it. Healthy eating does not improve just because we make it more complicated.
